Grand Traverse District News Words from DS Anita Hahn Bishop’s Day 2012: March 10th Mandatory Sexual Ethics Training Active Clergy Retreat District Youth News 50 Days of Prayer PAUMCS Celebrates 30 Years Annual Conference 2012 New District Missions Secretary District VIM Meeting Matt Moore Free Concert GT District Office Hours The death of Whitney Houston sent me down memory lane. Whitney sang a song when I was a young adult, what is funny as I look back, she would have been just that at the time, too, a young adult. If you are now as old as I am, you will remember the song, “Greatest Love of ALL!” Take a minute and remember the lyrics or if for the first time, read them. You can find it on YouTube, also, if you would like to listen to it. I believe the children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside Give them a sense of pride to make it easier Let the children’s laughter, remind us how we used to be Everybody’s searching for a hero People need someone to look up to I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs A lonely place to be So I learned to depend on me (Chorus) I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows If I fail, if I succeed At least I’ll live as I believe No matter what they take from me They can’t take away my dignity Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me I found the greatest love of all inside of me The greatest love of all Is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all And if, by chance, that special place That you’ve been dreaming of Leads you to a lonely place Find your strength in love Wikipedia shares the following about, “The Greatest Love of All." “It is a song written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed and originally recorded by Jane Olivor and then again by George Benson for the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic The Greatest. The song was later popularized by Whitney Houston. Creed wrote the lyrics in the midst of her struggle with breast cancer. The words describe her feelings about coping with great challenges that one must face in life, being strong during those challenges whether you succeed or fail, and passing that strength on to children to carry with them into their adult lives. Creed eventually succumbed to the disease in April 1986 at the age of 36; at the time her song was an international hit by Whitney Houston.” It takes me back to my college years and my early years of teaching. It takes me back to my Christian Clowning days and the skit that I did…over and over again, and yet, even today I remember. It was a skit that said within each one of us is a fool, a clown, and finally a servant. Picture if you will a Hobo Clown (not me) who is sad in appearance and rejected by the world. Now look at yourself and for a brief moment say, “Wow! I am so glad that I am not a sorry lot like he!” And then remember for a moment, that God made the clown, too. God even made the fool! And inside of each one of us God has placed the courage we need to be His servants so that NOBODY ever feels the fool or a clown because of our actions or witness. Following the skit, I would sign Whitney Houston’s song, “The Greatest Love of All!” You know as well as I do that every day there are things that seek to attack our ego, our feelings, our hearts, our skin…and sometimes, we are the one’s causing the attack! Ever accuse someone of something before you walked in their shoes or in the least took time to hear their story? We also know that to live as Christ calls, we sometimes appear the “fool.” And we have to pause and remember that that love inside of us does not come from the world, but from our God! And this Love has been known to totally confuse the world. I wonder how many young women Whitney gave hope and strength. Through this song, I was given courage and knew that the world may try to take much of who I was as a young woman away from me, but Whitney reminded me over and over, that God made me who I am and nobody can take that away from me…or from you! I wondered then and I wonder today if Whitney ever knew the God who gave her the LOVE that she sang about? Whitney’s song is still powerful—and has given me words that I stand on when my knees are knocking. We have our inner strength because it comes not from ourselves, but it comes from God. “You can’t take away my dignity!” The world can never strip us of what is not theirs to take. We belong to GOD! When Jesus was with the Pharisees they asked him, “What is the greatest commandment,” and Jesus responded, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39 Self love—isn’t about being self centered. It is about standing strong and tall in knowing whose you are. It is knowing that you don’t have to “cut down” another to gain self worth, “You are a child of God!” God knew you before you were born and loved you! God knew you at your weakest moment, and still loved you. God knows you in the midst of your greatest triumphs and dreams, and is cheering for you! Thanks for being someone’s HERO, today! Thanks for humbling yourself, as a clown, maybe even looking like a fool, so that in your reflection, others can see God in themselves! Blessings! Anita K. Hahn WORSHIP THOUGHT With Lent just around the corner, and your plans well under way, if you don’t need one more idea, do not read any further…however…if you plan a few things last minute or are still thinking what could make Palm Sunday really meaningful, take a look at the Newsboys song, “The King Is Coming.” Brainstorm for a minute, what would you do with this song if money, time, space, and the words, “We won’t be back if that happens, again” were not an issue. As Wesley (my oldest son) and I have listened we see palm branches and children, dancers with ribbons and huge purple banners all filling the sanctuary in a procession to “make a way for Jesus.” Then a pause in the “drama” as the doors to the sanctuary are “flung” open and the light of Christ enters into worship…or maybe someone dressed as Jesus coming in on a donkey. What do you see? Share your ideas with Pastor Anita (glue4evr@yahoo.com) and she will work to share a culmination of your ideas with everyone in two weeks, who knows, maybe you will get another great idea for worship! (Yes, the whole blog thing has to be the next step!) CAMPERS UNITE! How many campers do you have going to camp this year from your church? How many are you committing to send? Now is the time to start getting a summer camp experience on your children and youth’s calendar. It is also the time to begin doing some special fund raisers to help pay the way! Camp is not cheap, but it is the one experience that will change your young people’s lives. In all the ways you support children and youth, keep this one at the front of your ministry! The Youth at District Conference It was fun to see the Youth at the District Conference. It helped to remind us that the church is not of just one generation. One of the questions that came up at the Youth Workshop is, “How do you get youth into your youth group? I have found that showing interest in the youth gets them into the church/youth group. I have been going to the schools and volunteering for years. Schools are so desperate for help that they will take most anyone that is willing to help. You don’t proselytize there, or carry your Bible, but when they asked why you are there, you can let them know that they are Children of God and therefore of value to you. You can let them know what church you attend and even invite them to come. Ask your school if they need some help. We are also looking forward to seeing you all at Bishops Day in March 10th in Big Rapids. Fifty Days of Prayer On March 16, 2012, as a subscriber of the 50 Days of Prayer emails, you will begin receiving daily meditations that will enable us to join in prayer in the days before—and during—General Conference.
